This blog contains commentary on modern politics and society written by George William Van Cleve. He has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Virginia and a J.D. degree from Harvard Law School. He has served as a senior federal government official. In recent years, he has been a practicing attorney and a history and law professor. He is the author of A Slaveholders’ Union: Slavery, Politics and the Constitution in the Early American Republic (University of Chicago Press, 2010) and more than a dozen law and history journal articles and book chapters. He is currently working on a book tentatively entitled Stalemate Government: The Collapse of the Confederation, 1783-87.
